The name Gauteng comes from the Sotho-Tswana languages and means “place of gold” due to the thriving gold industry in the province since 1886.
Home to the largest city in the country, Gauteng is also the wealthiest province and is the financial hub of South Africa but also of the entire African continent. Being the financial centre, the province attracts a large amount of business and is home to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE).
The main areas of the province consist of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Midrand, Ekurhuleni and the popular and affluent Sandton.
The province is the entry point for many tourists and acts as a gateway to many destinations such as Cape Town, Durban, Kruger Park, the popular resort and casino of Sun City and the Pilanesberg National Park.
